Launch of the Singapore Grid Forum

SINGAPORE, 6 June, 2007 -- The Singapore Grid Forum (SGF) today announced its official launch at the GridAsia 2007 event.

SGF is a non-profit society with a mission to promote the growth and development of knowledge in the usage of Grid Computing and to foster close links with other Grid associations and organizations worldwide.

"The Grid community in Singapore has been active since 2001. It started initially with the BioMedical Grid, and then the National Grid initiative,” said Professor Lawrence Wong (President, SGF). “We are therefore today very happy to announce the official launch of the Singapore Grid Forum. SGF will be a new chapter in Singapore’s adoption and promotion of Grid Computing in the industry!”

The SGF will organize various Grid related workshops, seminars and programs to promote the increased usage of Grid Computing technologies in the local industry and reach out to communities in the education, government and commercial sector. One of its maiden efforts was the organization of a regional roundtable discussion on 4 July as part of GridAsia 2007, to discuss the promotion of regional Grid Forums as affiliates of the Open Grid Forum (OGF).

”The Singapore Grid community has been a very active one since 2000,” said Mr Mark Linesch, President of Open Grid Forum. “The Singapore Grid Forum is an OGF affiliate member since OGF inauguration, and I am pleased to see SGF taking the lead in co-organizing GridAsia 2007 and the Regional Roundtable discussion to help promote OGF in the region.”

“Singapore’s Grid community, in coming forth to form the Singapore Grid Forum, will pave the way for the country to enjoy the benefits of a Grid-enabled economy. Grid Computing will make it easier for not just our R&D community, but also Singapore’s key economic sectors such as digital media, life sciences, finance and banking, and manufacturing, to tap on shared compute resources to solve large-scale computation problems, optimise resource utilisation, reduce IT
costs, and ultimately, increase global competitiveness. This will help advance Singapore’s latest infocomm masterplan, iN2015, in harnessing ICT to build an intelligent nation and global city powered by infocomm,” said Mr Leong Keng Thai, Deputy Chief Executive/Director-General (Telecoms), Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore.
